OUR HISTORY
From Our Family To Yours What Sets Us Apart
Escanaba Furniture, Inc. D.B.A. Heynssens-Selin's Furniture, established in 1968 in Escanaba, Michigan, was founded by Robert "Bob" Heynssens with his partner, Dave Selin. Prior to opening the store, Bob installed carpet for several years, which provided him with valuable experience in the flooring and furnishings industry. The store, originally named Heynssens-Selin's Furniture and Carpet Store, has been serving the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and northeastern Wisconsin with quality residential and commercial furniture, flooring, and window treatments.
In 1984, David Nemacheck, along with his close friend and business partner Tom Butch, acquired Heynssens-Selin's. Before this venture, Dave had established a successful career in the automotive industry. In 1970, upon relocating to Gladstone, Michigan, Dave partnered with his uncle to manage the Northern Motors Ford dealership in Escanaba, where he honed his sales expertise and developed a reputation for his charismatic personality and customer-centric approach.
Under Dave's leadership, Heynssens-Selin's thrived, benefiting from his entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to community engagement. He managed the store until 2008, during which time he was known for his personable nature and dedication to both his customers and employees.
Up next for Heynssens-Selin’s was Kevin Warm, who purchased the business in 2008, ushering in a new era... With the expertise of long-time manager Laurie Nelson, they undertook the complex yet necessary task of modernizing daily operations. One of their most significant advancements was implementing the company’s first-ever computer system, a major shift from the entirely manual processes that had been in place for decades. Until then, sales, accounting, inventory management, and all other business operations had been meticulously recorded by hand — an impressive but increasingly unsustainable practice in the modern retail landscape.
Despite Kevin’s commitment to the business, his full-time career as a commercial airline pilot limited the time he could dedicate to the store’s day-to-day needs. Meanwhile, Laurie, after over 30 years of dedicated service, was preparing for retirement. Recognizing the need for new leadership, John and Krysta Seder stepped in purchasing the business from her brother, Kevin, and ensuring the family legacy continued while bringing fresh energy and vision to Heynssens‑Selin’s.
In July 2019, John and Krysta Seder officially took ownership. Their transition came at a pivotal time—just six months before the COVID-19 pandemic, an unforeseen challenge that would test their adaptability and resilience as business owners and business partners. Krysta brought with her an extensive background in interior design, holding a Bachelor of Arts degree in the field. With over 20 years of experience in kitchen design, she spent more than half of her career successfully running her own business, selling cabinetry online to customers nationwide. Her deep understanding of design aesthetics, functionality, and customer service made her a natural fit for leading Heynssens-Selin’s into the future.
John, on the other hand, came from a completely different industry. After earning his bachelor’s degrees in Wildlife Forestry Conservation and Criminal Justice, he spent nearly 15 years working his way up to the top position on Machine #4 at the local paper mill—a highly coveted role that took years of dedication and proficiency to achieve. While stepping away from such a hard-earned position was not an easy decision, John ultimately prioritized work-life balance and the opportunity to build something meaningful alongside his wife.
Now, as co-owners and daily operators, John and Krysta lead Heynssens-Selin’s together, combining their unique skill sets to drive the business forward. Their teamwork, passion, and dedication to quality service have allowed them to navigate challenges, further modernize operations, and continue the store’s long-standing reputation as a trusted furniture and flooring retailer in the community.
Throughout its history, Heynssens-Selin's has offered a wide range of products, including living room furniture, bedroom sets, dining room furniture, mattresses, flooring options, and window treatments. The store has featured various brands such as Flexsteel, La-Z-Boy, Stearns & Foster and Tempur-Pedic, aiming to provide exceptional service and quality products to create customers' dream homes or commercial spaces.
A Fun Twist of Fate
Fate certainly played a role in John and Krysta Seder’s journey — not just as business partners, but as life partners. Their story began at Heynssens-Selin’s, the very business they now own.

In 2010, Krysta joined the company to work for her brother, Kevin Warm, during the first six months of his ownership. Around that same time, John happened to be in the market for a new sofa and walked into the store — completely unaware that this shopping trip would lead to something much bigger than a furniture purchase.
While it might sound like "the rest is history", their paths actually took a detour. Krysta had already accepted a managerial position at an Ashley Furniture store in Washington, D.C., and had plans firmly in place to move. Despite their connection, life took them in different directions for the time being.
It wasn’t until four years later, when Krysta made the decision to move "home" for good, that their story truly began. Upon reconnecting, their relationship grew, eventually leading them not only to marriage but to taking the helm of Heynssens-Selin’s Furniture as co‑owners.
Now, their partnership extends beyond their personal lives into the day-to-day operations of the business. Their unique backgrounds, shared dedication, and complementary skill sets continue to shape the future of Heynssens-Selin’s, proving that sometimes, the best stories take a little time to unfold.
